A Dependent Student is a status of a financial aid recipient based on the US Department of Education requirements. Dependent students:

  • Are less than 24 years of age by December 31 of the award year
  • Are not orphaned by both parents or are not a ward of the court
  • Were not in foster care or was a ward of the court when 13 years or older;
  • Are not veterans of the US Armed Forces 
  • Are not serving active duty 
  • Are not a graduate or professional student 
  • Are not married 
  • Have no legal dependents other than a spouse
  • Are not an emancipated minor or have a legal guardianship
  • Are not a homeless youth


As a dependent student, students are required to include parent information on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
