A Dependent Student is a status of a financial aid recipient based on the US Department of Education requirements. Dependent students:
- Are less than 24 years of age by December 31 of the award year
- Are not orphaned by both parents or are not a ward of the court
- Were not in foster care or was a ward of the court when 13 years or older;
- Are not veterans of the US Armed Forces
- Are not serving active duty
- Are not a graduate or professional student
- Are not married
- Have no legal dependents other than a spouse
- Are not an emancipated minor or have a legal guardianship
- Are not a homeless youth
As a dependent student, students are required to include parent information on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
